1./ Fitting a spring loaded darning or free-motion embroidery foot
When fitting the a daring foot or embroidery foot to a sewing machine make sure the arm is above the needle clamp screw, I normally squeeze the foot (compressing the spring a little) while fitting it to the presser foot shank and at the same time making sure the spring loaded arm goes over the needle bar clamp.
2./ Difficulty threading top tensions
When threading the top thread, thread machine with the presser foot lifted, keep the thread taut while threading, make sure thread goes through take-up arm and between tension discs – After lowering the presser foot and before threading the needle pull down on the thread just above the needle and it should be taut, if not re-thread.
3./ Knocking noise, machine jammed
Thread caught in shuttle – Disassemble machine and clean shuttle or bobbin case.
4./ Where can I get an Instruction Book
Instruction books or an operators guide is essential reading for anyone starting to use a new or older sewing machine. Each style and model of sewing machine has its own requirements for threading and setting up. Allways refer to your machine’s manual, if you have it. We have a few of the older Instruction books you can download from our web site FREE.
5./ How to use an Automatic needle threader
The important thing is that the needle must not be slightly bent..
1. Put a new size 90 needle in the sewing machine.
2. Make sure the needle is at its highest point, before using the threader.
3. Pull the needle threader fully down and twist it, so the tiny hook of the needle threader goes through the needle eye.
4. Use the plastic hook on the left of the threader as a guide, while you push the thread against the needle (near the point) and move it up the needle until it reaches the stop bars, then slowly let the needle threader twist backwards out from the needle and it will spring back to its resting position.
5. Catch the loop of thread from the back of the needle.
This technique does need a little practice and is much easier then the description above.
6./ Automatic needle threader will not work
The needle threader hook is very tiny and easily bent or damaged.
The needle threader is designed not to turn, if the needle is not at its most upper position to protect the threader – Turn hand wheel until needle reaches its highest position.
Needle not alining with threader hook – Replace needle.
Threader hook bent – Replace with new needle threader hook.
7./ Noise is heard
Dust has accumulated in feed dogs – Clean machine.
Lint is in hook – Clean machine.
Pin in machine workings – Clean machine.
8./ Sewing Machine Needle Breaks
A thin needle was used for sewing a heavy weight material – Use correct size sewing machine needle of correct type.
Needle has not been fully inserted into needle bar – Properly insert needle.
Needle clamp screw is loose – Securely tighten needle clamp screw.
Presser foot is not correct one – Use correct presser foot.
Presser foot is loose – Reset presser foot.
Pulling on fabric as you sew – Do not pull fabric, guide it gently.
9./ Machine not moving fabric
Feed dog set embroidery lower position – Reset feed dog.
Presser foot preasure to low – Adjust presser foot preasure.
The stitch length has been set to zero – Reselect the proper stitch pattern and length.
Machine set in button hole mode – Check machine stitch settings.
10./ The machine does not feed material
The stitch length has been set to zero – Reselect the proper stitch pattern and length.
The presser foot pressure is too low – Set presser foot pressure adjustment lever to “normal”.
The machine is set in button hole mode – set machine the straight stitch
Feed dogs are lowered – Raise feed dogs.
Lint under needle plate – Clean out lint from between feed dog teeth.
